Investigating

By: Becky

Many people I have spoken to have said that they would like to take part in an investigation of an alleged haunted location but they don't know how to go about it.  These are my thoughts on conducting an investigation with some do's and don'ts , tips and tricks.

Do I need to be part of an organised group to take part in an investigation?

There are in my opinion pros and cons to being part of a group or not.  With an organised group you will gain a reputation that may be useful when getting permission to investigate certain locations (one investigation I enquired about required 3 references from previous locations!!).  You will also get to know the other people within the group making investigations more amicable and relaxed.  Another advantage of being a member of an organised group is that the group leaders will take care of all the arrangements and you will only have to worry about getting there.  Another alternative is to form a small informal group of your own.. this will give you most of the above advantages but perhaps a little more freedom to choose and arrange locations that you all wish to investigate.  It's never a good idea to investigate on your own - especially in isolated abandoned locations.

Tip: When investigating locations that are abandoned or isolated you may draw unwanted attention from vigilant members of the public wondering what you are up to in the middle of the night ... and spending the evening explaining yourself to the local constabulary isn't the desired outcome for any investigation ...so communication is key .. make sure that anyone who should know you are there does know ..and let the police know beforehand what you are doing - in some cases they will give you a reference number to quote if any problems DO occur that should save you a trip to the station.

What equipment do I need?

Well if you are hoping to prove to the world that the afterlife exists then obviously you'll need as much equipment as you can carry .... but generally you don't need vast amounts of stuff and although gadgets will give you something to do while you are waiting for those elusive ghosts to put in an appearance they can also distract from the investigation at hand.  I've compiled at list of things you should, could and perhaps might be lucky enough to take along on an investigation.

Must Haves:

Warm clothes - even on a summer night sitting around in the dark can be a nippy business.  So wear layers of clothing and make sure you have some gloves!!!

Torch - as most investigations are carried out in the dark a torch is an essential item!

Pen and Paper - Anything you see, hear or experience MUST be written down immediately, with times so that it can be verified with other people's accounts after the investigation.

Tip: When anyone sees or hears anything then this must be written down BEFORE discussing it with other members of the team.
